Workshop 5: Supporting Emotional Outbursts
Understanding Big Feelings and Supporting Regulation
What happens when a child becomes overwhelmed, angry, distressed or unable to engage?
This workshop explores children's emotional responses through an attachment- and nervous-system-informed lens.
We consider how stress affects behaviour and learning, how adults can offer co-regulation and how to respond compassionately while maintaining safety.
We also explore the importance of teachers' own emotional wellbeing and how understanding our responses can help us support children more effectively.
Key focus: Responding to emotional overwhelm with confidence, compassion and understanding.
