Workshop 3: Understanding Children's Behaviour

Nurturing Emotional Wellbeing, Motivation and Lifelong LearningRecognising the Needs Behind Behaviour

Looking Beneath the Surface of Challenging Behaviour

Why do children sometimes struggle to listen, cooperate, concentrate or manage their emotions?

Drawing on attachment theory, child development and trauma-informed approaches, we explore three important reasons behind challenging behaviour:

  1. Unmet needs.

  2. A lack of information or understanding.

  3. Accumulated stress and emotional overwhelm.

Teachers will explore practical ways to recognise what children may be communicating and respond with greater understanding and confidence.

Key focus: Understanding the reasons behind behaviour before deciding how to respond..
