Abstract

It's hard to believe that this was the advice not so long ago. John B Watson wrote in his manual, “Psychological Care of Infant and Child" wrote, “Never, never hug and kiss them, never let them sit in your lap. If you must, kiss them once on the forehead when they say goodnight. Shake hands with them in the morning.” Through the incredible work of John Bowlby and many more we know now that this treatment of children can cause mental, physical and emotional damage. In this seminar we will look at entirely different way of caring for our children by giving them full loving attention and recognising that stress and trauma are the main reasons why children behave in 'unwanted ways' while always ruling out any medical reasons. We will shift our understanding of crying and raging to welcome them as childrens natural capacity to heal and to delight in the healing that laughter and play can bring to our children and ourselves.
